Salt Lake City Temple History:

One of the most familiar religious symbols of the Latter-day Saints, the Salt Lake Temple was built between 1853 and 1893. The forty-year period of its construction witnessed the development of Utah and Mormonism from the bare beginnings of Salt Lake City’s pioneer settlement to the late Victorian era, just before Utah was granted statehood. Truman O. Angell, who was Brigham Young’s brother-in-law, served as Church architect and had charge of the design and construction of the building from its commencement until his death. Among the architects and draftsmen who assisted him were William Ward (1827–1893) and Angell’s son, Truman Jr. (1852–1933). At his death Angell was succeeded as Church architect by his nephew and Brigham Young’s son, Joseph Don Carlos Young (1855–1938). Following the completion of the temple in 1893, the Church Architect’s Office was closed, and Young returned to private practice in Salt Lake City.
