Porter Rockwell

Although eight years younger than Joseph Smith, Porter and Joseph were childhood friends. When just a boy, Porter picked berries, and sold them, to do his part in paying for the publishing of the Book of Mormon. He was baptized on the day the Church was organized, the youngest of the group, at just 16 years old.  He was a loyal friend, and body guard to Joseph Smith, and then Brigham Young.

After being jailed for eight months for attempting to assassinate Lilburn Boggs, Porter escaped and made his way to Nauvoo. After showing up at Joseph Smith’s home, during a Christmas party, looking like a mobber, Joseph, upon recognizing him said; "I prophesy, in the name of the Lord, that you — Orrin Porter Rockwell — so long as ye shall remain loyal and true to thy faith, need fear no enemy. Cut not thy hair and no bullet or blade can harm thee."

But, he did cut his hair, for a very special reason. Upon hearing of a widow who was balding from typhoid fever, he gave up his famous long hair to make the woman a wig. The recipient of the hair was Agnes Smith, widow of Joseph’s brother, Don Carlos.

Porter Rockwell died on June 9, 1878 of natural causes. At his funeral, Joseph F. Smith said: “They say he was a murderer; if he was he was the friend of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and he was faithful to them, and to his covenants, and he has gone to Heaven and apostates can go to Hell… Porter Rockwell was yesterday afternoon ushered into Heaven clothed with immortality and eternal life, and crowned with all glory which belongs to a departed saint. He has his little faults but Porter’s life on earth, taken altogether, was one worthy of example, and reflected honor upon the church. Through all his trials he had never once forgotten his obligations to his brethren and his God."
