President of UN General Assembly Meets With First Presidency

The president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Csaba Korosi, met with the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. This was the first time a president of the General Assembly has met with the First Presidency at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City.

Korosi also met with Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during his historic visit to Temple Square and went to the FamilySearch Library during the visit to learn more about his ancestors.

The veteran Hungarian diplomat was appointed to his role as president in June 2022.

The Church of Jesus Christ works closely with various United Nations relief agencies, making substantial contributions to the work of the U.N. through its humanitarian efforts.

Background

In 2019, Salt Lake City hosted an annual conference for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). During that conference, then General Assembly President María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés of Ecuador became the first sitting president to visit Utah. She took a tour of the Church’s Welfare Square.

In November 2019, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited New York City where he met with the office of the president of the General Assembly. They discussed several shared priorities, including eradicating hunger and poverty and improving education.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains government relations offices in New York City and Geneva, Switzerland. Church representatives serve on committees for nongovernmental organizations and maintain relationships with leaders of the United Nations.
