"John Taylor Portrait" - John Taylor was the third president of the Church, was born in England and is the only president of the Church born outside the United States.  He emigrated to Toronto Canada with his immediate family. The apostle Parley P Pratt was serving a mission in Toronto and taught Taylor and his wife about the restoration.  John Taylor joined the Church and moved his family to Far West Missouri where he was ordained an apostle in 1838.

John Taylor, along with Willard Richards stayed with the arrested Joseph and Hyrum Smith in Carthage.  He was wounded severely as the mob attacked and killed Joseph and Hyrum but with the aid of Willard Richards survived to see the Saints move west to their mountain haven and become the third president of the Church.
