A little History on Beehives

In 1881 the Deseret News described the use of the beehive art symbol by Latter-day Saints this way: "The hive and honey bees form our communal coat of arms…. It is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation." It’s history among the Latter-day Saints likely finds its source in the Book of Mormon, where the Jaredites carried "with them Deseret, which, by interpretation, is a honey bee" (Ether 2:3)

Other cultures also celebrate the Bee and the Beehive. Jewish tradition says that “Bees have a sting within them, yet their product is sweet. We are hoping that God’s attribute of judgement will be tempered by His attribute of mercy, producing a sweeter result.” And Saint John Chrysostom wrote that ";the bee is more honored than other animals, not because it labors, but because it labors for other";. Thoughts to ponder as we enjoy these beautiful representations.

The beehive adorns many church buildings - books & Latter-day Saint art. Here are a few of note:

The Beehive House in Salt Lake City  -  The Beehive News Paper  -  Utah Beehive State  -  Beehive on the podium in the conference center  -  BYU logo is a beehive  -  Beehive Clothing at church distribution  -  Beehives Girls Youth Program
