A little History on Beehives 


In 1881 the Deseret News described the use of the beehive symbol this way: "The hive and honey bees
form our communal coat of arms…. It is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and
frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation." It’s
history among the Saints likely finds its source in the Book of Mormon, where the Jaredites carried "with
them Deseret, which, by interpretation, is a honey bee" (Ether 2:3)


Other cultures also celebrate the Bee and the Beehive. Jewish tradition says that “Bees have a sting
within them, yet their product is sweet. We are hoping that God’s attribute of judgement will be
tempered by His attribute of mercy, producing a sweeter result.” And Saint John Chrysostom wrote that
";the bee is more honored than other animals, not because it labors, but because it labors for other";.
Thoughts to ponder as we enjoy these beautiful representations.
